A new arrival among the red pandas!
Update 09/10: News of our red panda cub!
Inès’s cub, who happens to be a female, is doing wonderfully well and growing steadily, fed exclusively on her mother’s milk. Her keepers recently spotted her alongside her mum and were able to capture this tender moment on video.
And as for her name… thanks to votes on Facebook and Instagram from among five suggestions put forward by the keepers (Malana, Souka, Darsha, Kyra or Haru), our little red panda is officially called: Kyra!
Still very shy, Kyra stays snuggled up in her den or nestled against her mum. Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her on your next visit.
On 6 July, shortly after the ZooParc closed, a red panda cub was born quietly, away from prying eyes. Her mum, Ines, is an experienced female who has already raised six cubs, including twins in 2024. The birth was confirmed thanks to the cameras installed in the enclosures.
The cub’s sex is not yet known. We will have to wait for a full veterinary examination, which will also provide an opportunity to fit it with an identification microchip, without disturbing it unnecessarily beforehand.
Ines, an attentive and confident mother
Since the birth, Ines has been looking after her baby with great calm and confidence. She is nursing it well, keeping it in the den or occasionally moving it from one shelter to another, and even into the muntjac house. A few very lucky visitors have even caught a glimpse of this furtive move… an extremely rare moment!
At present, the baby is not yet on public view. He spends his days sleeping, rolling over, and growing quietly. Next big milestones: opening its eyes, getting its first teeth and starting to walk.
An important birth for a vulnerable species
The red panda is classified as ‘Vulnerable’ by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), mainly due to deforestation, fires and the loss of its habitat. Every birth in a zoo is therefore good news.
For the teams at Beauval, this birth is also a real reward: “It shows that the living conditions provided for the animals are suitable and that the care given to each individual is bearing fruit,” says Delphine, an animal keeper at ZooParc de Beauval.
Three red pandas at Beauval
Three red pandas now live at ZooParc de Beauval:
- Browny, an 8-year-old male, born on 20 June 2017 at Beekse Bergen Safari Park in Hilvarenbeek (Netherlands),
- Ines, a female of the same age, born on 12 June 2017 at Rotterdam Zoo (Netherlands)
- and their cub, born on 6 July 2025 at Beauval.
The red pandas live in a wooded area shared with muntjacs, small Asian deer. A very secretive species, they spend most of their time perched or hidden away, which makes every sighting all the more special for visitors.
