Some news and an absolutely ‘adorable’ video of the little koala baby in Genoa

Baby koala

He doesn’t have a name yet, nor is his sex known, and according to the keepers, he’s rather shy… Its mum is Genoa, our female koala, and her little one is right up there on the ‘cuteness’ scale. Sometimes, the animal carers are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a paw or a head… You may well have been one of them if you’ve visited Beauval in recent weeks. According to the experts who closely monitor Genoa and her joey every day in the Australian Greenhouse, it will be in February that the baby koala starts to emerge from the pouch fairly regularly. Nothing is set in stone, as it will be going back and forth between the pouch and its mother’s back. It’s impossible to say how long it will take the joey to become independent, as this varies from individual to individual. Sometimes it can take quite a long time, especially for males!

This is Genoa’s third baby, following Wooli – who is still at Beauval – and Gowi Nee Bu, who was transferred to Lisbon Zoo in June 2023. Of all the koalas in the Australian House, Genoa was already the ‘biggest’. This is even more so now that she’s carrying her joey in her pouch. So she’s quite easy to spot. Genoa is one of the top three animals available for sponsorship (out of around forty) in 2024.
By sponsoring our female koala, you’ll be supporting the Beauval Nature charity and helping to conserve endangered species. So do a good deed and become Genoa’s sponsor!
