Here are the names of the two golden snub-nosed monkeys babies: Jinli and Jinyou!
Many of you took part in our competition to choose the names of the two golden snub-nosed monkeys babies born this year at ZooParc de Beauval. After several days of voting, from 11 to 19 August, the verdict is in: Jinli, which means ‘gift’ or ‘golden beauty’, and Jinyou, which means ‘faithful friend’, are the big winners!
A warm welcome to the female, Jinli, and the male, Jinyou!
In collaboration with the CWCA (China Wildlife Conservation Association), the teams at ZooParc de Beauval had shortlisted three name suggestions for each of the two babies.
For Jindou’s little female, born on 11 March, the name Jinli came out on top with 6,825 votes, ahead of Jinxi (3,585 votes) and Jinming (1,495 votes).
For Jinhua’s little male, born on 2 April, Jinyou came out on top with 4,492 votes, ahead of Jinyun (3,997) and Jinlan (3,416), following a closer vote.
A total of 11,905 people voted. Thank you to everyone for your fantastic participation!
Inspired by Chinese culture, their new names feature the character ‘Jin’, which is already present in their parents’ names: the females Jindou and Jinhua, and the male Jinbao. These two names will now accompany the first golden snub-nosed monkeys born in a zoo outside Asia throughout their lives.
Two little golden snub-nosed monkeys full of energy!
Since their historic births in the spring, Jinli and Jinyou have changed a great deal. Their fur is gradually lightening in colour, they are becoming more independent every day and now spend much of their time exploring their enclosure.
Ropes, ladders, climbing frames, bamboo… everything has become a playground! Their favourite activity? Climbing up the bamboo before letting themselves drop back to the ground, making the most of the flexibility of the branches… then doing it all over again!
The two little ones are very close and play together a lot, even though their personalities are already starting to differ. Jinli is particularly energetic and expressive: when she’s upset, she might let out vocalisations or stamp her feet rapidly on the ground. This is behaviour that Jinyou, who is a little calmer, is also starting to copy.
Their father, Jinbao, shows remarkable patience. Jinli and Jinyou love to climb onto his back or use his long tail like a proper climbing rope whilst he’s eating. When they get a bit too intrusive, he knows how to set some boundaries… before they’re off playing again a few seconds later!
They also stay very close to their mothers, Jindou and Jinhua, particularly when resting.
