New for 2027: maned wolves and the Flamingo Trail – come and discover them at Beauval!

New for 2027: the maned wolf

From spring 2027, a host of new attractions will be waiting for visitors to the ZooParc de Beauval! Among them, two wonderful new additions will put South America in the spotlight. Two young maned wolves, recognisable by their long black legs, reddish-brown fur and large, erect ears, will be making their debut at the ZooParc. Another new feature: the Great South American Aviary will unveil a new trail, the Flamingo Trail, which will allow visitors to explore this spectacular area from ground level, from a completely new angle. Two new experiences not to be missed!

Two young maned wolves to see from spring 2027

A new species is set to arrive at Beauval! Originally from European zoos, two young maned wolves – a male and a female – will be on display from spring 2027.

These remarkable South American canids will be housed in the current sitatunga enclosure, which will be refurbished to meet their needs. The sitatungas, meanwhile, will move to the Somali donkey enclosure.

Neither a true wolf nor a fox: a truly astonishing canid!

Despite its name and appearance, the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is neither a true wolf nor a fox! Native to the savannahs of South America, it is the continent’s largest canid, reaching a height of around 90 cm at the withers. Its long black legs enable it to move through tall grass, whilst its reddish-brown coat and large ears give it a silhouette that is instantly recognisable.

Primarily solitary and active at dusk and during the night, this canid also has an omnivorous diet. It feeds on small animals, but also on a variety of fruits, notably those of the lobeira, a plant characteristic of the South American savannahs.

Another surprising feature is that its urine gives off a very strong odour, sometimes compared to that of cannabis! This scent marking enables it, in particular, to signal its presence to other members of its species and to mark out its territory.

Listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, the maned wolf is particularly threatened by the loss and fragmentation of its habitat, especially in the Brazilian Cerrado, where the savannahs are gradually being converted into farmland and pasture.

The Flamingo Trail: the Great Aviary seen from the ground!

From spring 2027, the South American Great Aviary will unveil a brand-new trail: the Flamingo Trail! Whilst the current footbridges allow visitors to admire this vast space of nearly 2 hectares from above, this new trail will invite visitors to explore it at ground level, amidst lush vegetation.

New for 2027: the Flamingo Trail

This new ground-level trail will allow you to observe the many species in the South American Great Aviary

A unique vantage point from which to observe the many species that inhabit Europe’s largest aviary! Visitors will be able to admire Caribbean flamingos, scarlet ibises and brown pelicans – species found nowhere else in France except at Beauval – as well as try to spot giant anteaters and Colombian spider monkeys. In total, nearly 1,000 animals inhabit this exceptional space, offering plenty of opportunities for observation and wonder along this new trail!

Alongside the Flamingo Trail, the South American Aviary will offer a complementary visitor experience, providing a different way to discover the animals and vegetation of this iconic area of the ZooParc. Please note: The Flamingo Trail will not be accessible to visitors with reduced mobility (PRM).

In 2027, come to the ZooParc de Beauval to meet the maned wolves and explore the Flamingo Trail – two new attractions that showcase the extraordinary biodiversity of South America!
